Why Choose a Gulet Cruise to the Aeolian Islands
The Timeless Charm of the Traditional Gulet
The gulet is much more than a boat: it is an icon of the Mediterranean, a vessel that has its roots in the Turkish maritime tradition and which today represents the most elegant and authentic way of sailing between the islands.
Our traditional gulets of approximately 24 meters are small floating jewels, designed to offer you maximum comfort without giving up the charm of sailing. Each gulet is equipped with 5 or 6 welcoming cabins, each with private bathroom and air conditioning, to guarantee you privacy and relaxation after a day spent between sun and sea.
But what makes this experience truly special is the intimate and familiar atmosphere that is created on board. Unlike large cruise ships, here you are not a number: you are a guest, welcomed as if in a houseboat where every detail is carefully taken care of.
A Crew That Makes the Difference
On board you will be accompanied by an expert crew made up of a captain, sailor and cook, professionals who know these waters like the back of their hands and who love their work with passion.
The commander is not only an expert navigator, but also your exceptional guide: he knows every hidden corner of the Aeolian Islands, every secret bay, every story that these islands jealously guard. It is he who will decide, day by day, the best routes based on sea and wind conditions, to always give you the most pleasant and safe navigation.
The board chef is an artist of Mediterranean cuisine. Every meal is a celebration of local flavours: fresh fish caught in the surrounding waters, fragrant vegetables, artisanal cheeses, homemade pasta, desserts that tell the story of Sicilian tradition. And everything is prepared with love, using the highest quality raw materials, to let you savor the best of Aeolian gastronomy while being lulled by the waves.
The Perfect Formula: Freedom and Comfort
Our formula is half board, a choice designed to give you maximum flexibility. Breakfasts and lunches on board are moments of conviviality and relaxation, while dinners are often free on land, giving you the opportunity to go down to the islands, stroll through the scented alleys, sit in a typical trattoria or restaurant with a sea view, and experience the authentic Aeolian evening life.
Do you want to dine on board while admiring the sunset? No problem. Do you prefer to explore the clubs of Panarea? You are free to do so. This is the beauty of gulet cruising: you decide the pace of your vacation.
The Itinerary: A Journey Through Seven Unique Islands
Day 1: Milazzo – The Beginning of the Adventure
Your adventure begins in late afternoon at the port of Milazzo, the natural gateway to the Aeolian Islands. Boarding is scheduled from 6.00 pm, when the daylight begins to turn golden and the port fills with that particular atmosphere that precedes each departure.
Climb aboard and let yourself be won over by your gulet: the warm wood under your feet, the tidy ropes, the sails ready to unfurl in the wind. The captain welcomes you personally and, during the initial briefing, explains the rules on board, the safety equipment, and above all the itinerary that awaits you in the next few days.
Depending on the weather conditions and the group’s preferences, the captain could decide to set sail immediately towards Lipari, giving you a magical first sailing at sunset, or stay moored in Milazzo for the night. In the latter case, you have the evening free: a walk along the seafront, a dinner in one of the typical restaurants, a last taste of life on land before letting yourself be completely conquered by the sea.
That first night on board, with the gentle movement of the water cradling you, is just the beginning of something special.
Day 2: Filicudi – The Wild Island
Waking up on board is an experience you won’t soon forget. The sound of the sea, the scent of the coffee prepared by the chef, the light that filters through the porthole of your cabin. Get on deck in time to see the gulet leaving the port and setting sail towards Filicudi, one of the most authentic and wild islands of the archipelago.
Filicudi is the island that time seems to have forgotten. Here nature dominates unchallenged: jagged coasts, waters of an impossible blue, seabeds rich in life. During navigation, the view becomes more and more spectacular, and when you finally arrive in sight of the Scoglio de La Canna, a monolith of volcanic stone that rises 71 meters from the sea, you are left speechless.
The captain anchors the gulet in a protected bay, and the moment you’ve been waiting for arrives: the first dive into the crystal clear waters of the Aeolian Islands. The water is so transparent that you can see the seabed meters deep. You swim, snorkel, let yourself float looking at the sky, completely immersed in the beauty of this place.
Those who want an extra experience can take the tender and reach the Grotta del Bue Marino, a sea cave where the light creates extraordinary chromatic effects. Meanwhile, on board, the cook prepares lunch: a plate of pasta with the catch of the day, a fresh salad, seasonal fruit. You eat on the deck, with the sea around you and the silence of nature as a background.
The afternoon passes slowly, with baths, reading, chatting with the other guests, little naps in the shade of the awning. When the sun begins to descend towards the horizon, the gulet moves to anchor in the harbor in front of the small village of Filicudi. In the evening, go up to the bridge and lose yourself looking at the sky: here, far from the city lights, the stars shine like you’ve never seen them.
Day 3: Salina – The Green Island
In the morning the gulet sets sail towards Salina, known as the green island of the Aeolian Islands for its lush vegetation. Unlike the other islands, which are more arid and barren, Salina is a riot of colours: terraced vineyards, fern woods, capers that grow spontaneously among the rocks.
This morning’s destination is Cala di Pollara, one of the most spectacular bays in the entire Mediterranean. When the gulet approaches, you find yourself immersed in a postcard setting: a semi-circular bay enclosed by high walls of volcanic rock, with a small pebble beach and white houses climbing the hill. This is where the movie “Il Postino” was filmed, and you can’t help but understand why: the beauty here is pure, unfiltered.
You anchor, you dive, you explore. The water is calm and inviting, perfect for swimming to shore or just floating around letting the sun warm your skin. In the afternoon, the gulet sails along the island towards Lingua or Santa Marina di Salina, the two main villages of the island.
In the evening you go ashore for a free dinner. Lingua is famous for its quiet seafront and for Alfredo’s lemon granita, considered by many to be the best in all of Sicily. Santa Marina, on the other hand, offers a wider choice of restaurants: you can sit in a family-run trattoria and order spaghetti with sea urchins, swordfish alla ghiotta, and a glass of Malvasia, the sweet, amber wine that is the pride of Salina.
You return on board with a full belly and a happy heart, and you fall asleep lulled by the sea, with the scent of salt coming in through the open window.
Day 4: Panarea – The Glamor of the Mediterranean
Panarea is the smallest and most glamorous island of the archipelago. Here, elegance and nature coexist in perfect balance: luxury yachts docked next to fishing boats, chic boutiques among whitewashed houses, spectacular sunsets followed by lively evenings in seaside clubs.
The morning begins with a stop at Cala Junco, a natural bay protected by volcanic cliffs, with water so transparent it seems fake. It is a paradise for snorkelers: the seabed here is full of life, with schools of colorful fish, starfish, and underwater rock formations that look like natural sculptures.
Lunch is served while sailing, while the gulet heads towards Lisca Bianca, an uninhabited islet where the sea boils with underwater fumaroles. It’s a strange and fascinating experience: swimming among these bubbles of volcanic gas, feeling the water warmer in some places, feeling the energy of the earth living beneath you.
In the afternoon we continue towards Basiluzzo, another islet in the Panarea archipelago, surrounded by seabeds ideal for snorkelling. Here the afternoon light creates magical effects underwater, and you can spend hours exploring every nook and cranny.
But Panarea is at its best after sunset. In the evening, the main village is transformed: the alleys light up with soft lights, the clubs open their terraces overlooking the sea, music begins to fill the air. You can choose to dine in one of the elegant restaurants on the island, sip an aperitif in one of the most famous bars, or simply stroll through the narrow streets admiring the boutiques and breathing in the unique atmosphere of this place.
Panarea is the place where you feel a bit like a VIP, even just for one evening.

Day 5: Stromboli – The Living Volcano
If there is one experience that defines a cruise to the Aeolian Islands, it is arriving at Stromboli at sunset. This active volcano, which has been erupting regularly every 15-20 minutes for thousands of years, is one of the most extraordinary natural sights on the planet.
The gulet slowly approaches the Sciara del Fuoco, the side of the island where the lava flows slide directly into the sea. The sun is descending towards the horizon, painting the sky orange and pink. And then, suddenly, you see it: an explosion of red lava rising from the crater, lighting up the evening like a natural firework.
It’s a moment that takes your breath away. You are witnessing something that has been happening since time immemorial, a demonstration of the power of the Earth that continues to shape itself before your eyes. The gulet remains there, in a safe position, allowing you to observe this unique spectacle in the world from the sea, the best point of view.
During the day, there is time to visit the village of Stromboli, a small cluster of white houses where life flows simple and authentic. There are no cars, just narrow streets, cats sleeping in the sun, and a handful of trattorias where you can sample the local cuisine. Those who wish can also book a guided excursion to the crater (not included in the cruise), a challenging but unforgettable trek that takes you to the edge of the active volcano.
Before leaving Stromboli, the gulet makes a stop at Strombolicchio, a volcanic rock that emerges from the sea with its perfect conical shape, surmounted by a lighthouse. It is the last farewell to this fiery giant before continuing the journey.
Day 6: Vulcano – The Force of the Elements
If Stromboli is the spectacular volcano, Vulcano is the volcano that you can touch, smell and experience. This island is a concentration of primordial forces: fumaroles that puff sulphurous vapours, beaches of very hot black sand, boiling thermal waters, and a crater that, even if dormant, reminds you that nature rules here.
The morning is dedicated to exploring the coastal wonders of the island by sea. We start from the Grotta del Cavallo, a sea cave where the water takes on incredible shades thanks to the play of light. Then we continue towards the Swimming Pool of Venus, a natural bay with warm, sulphurous waters, perfect for a regenerating bath.
Lunch on board is followed by free time to choose how to enjoy the afternoon. You can relax on Sabbia Nere, the most famous volcanic beach on the island, where the sand is so hot it almost burns under your feet. Or you can tackle the excursion to the crater (not included), a walk of about an hour that takes you to the edge of the volcano, with a breathtaking view that extends over the entire archipelago. The sunset seen from up there is something you will carry in your heart forever.
Alternatively, there are those who prefer to immerse themselves in the thermal mud of the Pozza dei Fanghi, near the port. It’s a special experience: you smear yourself with hot, sulphurous mud, let yourself dry in the sun, and then wash yourself in the sea. The skin afterwards is soft as silk. The smell of sulfur stays with you for a while, but it’s part of the game.
Day 7: Lipari – The Queen of the Aeolian Islands
The last days of the cruise are dedicated to Lipari, the largest and richest in history island of the archipelago. Lipari has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and everywhere you look you find traces of the past: Greek ruins, medieval walls, baroque churches, the castle that dominates the main village from above.
But Lipari is also spectacular nature. The gulet sails among the Faraglioni, impressive towers of volcanic rock that emerge from the sea, and then heads towards the Pumice Quarries, where the waters take on a milky and surreal color due to the white sediments. Here you take the last dip in the crystal clear waters, a bittersweet moment because you know the cruise is coming to an end.
In the afternoon you can go ashore and get lost in the village of Lipari. Marina Corta is the beating heart of the island, with its marina surrounded by colorful houses, outdoor cafes, artisanal ice cream parlors. Climb up to the Castle, visit the Archaeological Museum (one of the most important in the Mediterranean regarding prehistory), stroll through the streets of the historic center, be tempted by the shops selling typical products: capers, dried tomatoes, honey, local wines.
In the evening, the last dinner (whether on board or on land) has a special flavour. You look around, observe the faces of the people with whom you shared this experience, and realize that in a week bonds have been created that go beyond simple acquaintance. The sea has this power: it brings people together, creates communities.
Day 8: Goodbye, Aeolian
Disembarkation is expected the following morning by 09:00, in Milazzo or directly in Lipari, depending on the itinerary. You have breakfast on deck for the last time, breathe deeply in the salty air, fix every detail in your memory: the sound of the halyards banging against the mast, the morning light dancing on the water, the scent of the sea.
You disembark with your backpack on your shoulders and your heart full. That feeling of peace, that freedom, that deep connection with nature that you have experienced in these days will accompany you for a long time. And as you walk away from the port, one thing is certain: you will return.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Gulet Cruise to the Aeolian Islands
How does booking work?
The formula is per cabin: you book the number of cabins you need and share the gulet with other travellers. It’s the perfect way to enjoy this experience even if you don’t have a group big enough to rent the whole boat, and it’s often an opportunity to make new friends with people who, like you, love the sea and authentic travel.
If you prefer to have the gulet all to yourself and your group (up to 10-12 people), we can also organize private charters on request.
This is my first time traveling by boat: is it right for me?
Absolutely yes! You do not need any nautical experience to participate in this cruise. The gulet is stable, comfortable, and the crew takes care of everything. You just have to relax and enjoy the ride.
Even those who suffer from seasickness find gulets very comfortable, because they are large and stable boats. Furthermore, navigation mainly takes place during the day, with frequent stops for swimming and relaxation, and we always sleep at anchor in protected bays, so movement is minimal during the night.
What kind of people go on these cruises?
You will find a varied and interesting mix: couples looking for a romantic holiday, friends who want to share an adventure, singles curious to meet new people, families with teenage boys (the formula is less suitable for very young children, given the nature of the holiday).
What they all have in common is the love for the sea, the desire to live an authentic experience, and the desire to slow down and reconnect with nature. A familiar and relaxed atmosphere is always created on board.
When is the best time to go?
Each period has its charm:
-
May-June and September: calm sea, pleasant temperatures (not too hot), less crowded islands, more accessible prices. Perfect for those seeking tranquility and authenticity.
-
July: the sea is warm and inviting, the days are long, the atmosphere is lively. A good compromise between tranquility and evening nightlife.
-
August: the moment of maximum animation, especially in Panarea and Lipari. Perfect for those who love social life. It is also the most popular (and most expensive) period, so advance booking is recommended.
Our suggestion? June or September offer the best value for money-experience.
Are there electrical outlets in the cabin?
Yes, each cabin is equipped with electrical outlets (220V) to charge phones, cameras, etc. However, consider that when the gulet is at anchor and the generator is turned off (at night), the outlets may not be active. Bring a power bank if you have a lot of devices to charge.
Getting bored on board?
This is the most frequently asked question, and the answer is: never! The days on board have a perfect rhythm, punctuated by navigation, swimming, lunches, explorations on land, and moments of relaxation. You’ll be amazed at how full and fulfilling a day can be without constant wifi and beeping notifications.
You can read a book lying on the deck, go snorkeling, chat with other guests, help the captain hoist the sails, or simply stand there and watch the sea. Doing nothing becomes an art.
Can the itinerary change?
Yes, and this is one of the beauties of sailing: you go where the sea allows you to go. The captain has the experience and knowledge to adapt the itinerary based on weather and sea conditions, always guaranteeing your safety and maximum comfort.
Sometimes a bay that seemed perfect on paper turns out to be too exposed to the wind, and another equally beautiful one is chosen. Or the commander decides to stay longer in one place because the conditions are ideal. This flexibility is not a problem, but an added value: it allows you to experience the true essence of navigation, following the rhythm of the sea.
How do you sleep on board?
The cabins are cozy and equipped with air conditioning, a real luxury during the hot Mediterranean summer nights. The beds are comfortable (usually one double or two singles, depending on the configuration), and the linen is changed weekly.
At night, when the gulet is anchored in a protected bay, the movement of the water is gentle and lulling – many say they slept better on the boat than at home! The sound of the waves is the perfect soundtrack for falling asleep.
What happens in case of bad weather?
The captain constantly monitors the weather forecast and adapts the itinerary accordingly. Gulets are safe and stable vessels, but if conditions are not ideal, you seek shelter in a port or change plans.
It must be said that the Mediterranean in summer is generally calm, and storms are rare. Most cruises go smoothly, with just a few days of stronger winds (which for some is the beauty of sailing!).
In the event of particularly adverse weather conditions that prevent departure, alternative solutions or reimbursement will be evaluated according to the contractual conditions.
